FIFA have officially launched an investigation into South Africa midfielder Teboho Mokoena’s ineligibility, sparking heartbreak and uncertainty for Bafana Bafana.

FIFA has reportedly launched an official investigation into the alleged ineligibility of South African midfielder Teboho Mokoena, dealing a significant blow to Bafana Bafana’s World Cup hopes.

In a letter dated September 15, FIFA informed the South African Football Association (SAFA) that disciplinary proceedings have been opened against both the association and Mokoena.

The case has been referred to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, which has given SAFA and the player six days to submit their response.

This development comes as a heartbreaking surprise for South African fans, who had believed the issue was resolved.

Earlier on, FIFA released their latest list of disciplinary sanctions related to the FIFA World Cup 2026 preliminary rounds, which notably cleared South Africa of any wrongdoing.

The ruling had offered hope and relief, especially against the backdrop of intense competition from continental rivals such as Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

FIFA’s confirmation that Bafana Bafana had no pending disciplinary incidents had rekindled optimism about their qualifying campaign.

However, the new investigation into Mokoena’s eligibility now casts uncertainty over the team’s status and could have major implications for South Africa’s qualification path.

The controversy started after reports confirmed the Sundowns star should have been suspended for the March fixture due to yellow card accumulation.

Under FIFA’s disciplinary code, such an offense could result in a 3-0 forfeiture of the match, a points deduction, and a fine for South Africa, who currently lead Group C

As South Africa anxiously awaits the outcome of the investigation, the focus will be on how SAFA and Mokoena respond to the allegations within the six-day deadline.

The decision will be critical for the future of Bafana Bafana and the key contenders in the group like Benin Republic, Nigeria and Rwanda as they strive to secure their place at the 2026 World Cup.
