Serie A giants AC Milan have been warned about the possible downsides of signing Super Eagles star Victor Boniface
AC Milan’s pursuit of Victor Boniface is drawing caution from Italian media, with Gazzetta dello Sport branding the move a gamble.
The Nigerian striker’s injury history has been flagged as a major concern, despite his impressive record when fit.
Injury concerns overshadow Milan’s move
The Rossoneri are close to sealing an initial loan deal with an option to buy for €32 million, dropping interest in Manchester United forward Rasmus Højlund to push ahead with Boniface.
However, Gazzetta dello Sport has warned that the move may prove costly due to the striker’s troubling injury record.
Boniface’s setbacks began at his first European club, Bodo/Glimt, where he endured two cruciate ligament injuries in March 2019 and November 2020, both of which halted his progress during key developmental years.
The pattern continued at Bayer Leverkusen, where in January 2024, he was sidelined for three months with an adductor problem. Later that same year, he missed 12 matches after a thigh injury, raising doubts about his long-term reliability at the highest level.
Boniface remains a proven scorer when fit
Despite these setbacks, Boniface has shown why top clubs remain eager to take a risk on the Super Eagles star.
His debut campaign at Bayer Leverkusen highlighted his attacking instincts, with 21 goals in 34 appearances across all competitions.
Overall, the 24-year-old has scored 32 times in 61 matches for the Bundesliga champions, proving that when available, he is one of Europe’s most clinical finishers.
For AC Milan, the signing remains risky given that the chance to secure a prolific forward at a reasonable cost also comes with the risk of investing in a player whose career has been repeatedly interrupted by injuries.
As Gazzetta concluded, his success in Serie A may ultimately depend more on luck and fitness than pure ability.
