Ex-Manchester United star Diego Forlan believes Manchester United can reach the current level of Manchester City.

Despite Manchester City's recent dominance over their crosstown rivals and the rest of the Premier League at large, Diego Forlan believes his former club, Manchester United, are bridging the gap.

The Uruguayan joined the Red Devils in the winter of 2002 from Argentinian side Independiente and went on to score 17 goals in 19 games for the club.

Forlan went on to have a great career in LALIGA with Villarreal and Atletico Madrid, but he maintained a relationship with the Red Devils, and he believes the record Premier League champions are on an ascent back to the top.

What Forlan said about Manchester United and Man City

The Uruguayan legend discussed his former club in a discussion with the Post, where he claimed Manchester City were not invincible and that the Red Devils were reaching those heights once again.

He cited the FA Cup final between those teams, a clash the striker believes to have been tightly contested despite the result going the way of Guardiola's team.

He also pointed out the Community Shield final against Arsenal, which the Cityzens lost, as a reference for their vulnerability.

“We want United to reach the heights we know they can,” Forlan said.

“They played well in the Cup final against Manchester City; it was close, not like the beginning of the season when there was a big difference between the teams. City are the team to beat, but they are not invincible.

“Arsenal managed a draw, then won on penalties in the Community Shield last week.

“The United-City rivalry has grown much stronger over the years. Manchester United are reaching that level [attained by City] with the players they have and a good manager, who had a strong first year.

“The best players stayed, and they added good quality. Hopefully, United can fight for the title and it is vital, at least, for the club to qualify for the Champions League.”
