Chelsea suffered a painful defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup at Wembley.

Chelsea's recent cup final hoodoo struck again on Sunday as a youthful Liverpool side lifted the 2024 EFL Cup at Wembley.

Pulse Sports Nigeria reports that the Blues matched the injury-hit Reds, but ultimately fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat after extra time against Jurgen Klopp’s men.

The Londoners were firm favourites ahead of kick-off against an inexperienced Liverpool eleven missing star men like Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and goalkeeper, Alisson Becker.

But goals win games, and it was Reds skipper, Virgil van Dijk who wrote himself into Merseyside folklore by netting the winner in the second half of extra time.

Chelsea lost for the 6th time in England.

A tightly contested affair was settled when van Dijk stole in to head into the net latched following a well-struck corner from Liverpool's substitute, Konstantinos Tsimikas skipper.

While Liverpool celebrated another cup win under Klopp, for Chelsea, it was despair as they suffered a sixth successive cup final defeat.

The Blues seem to have developed a worrying habit of freezing in the biggest fixtures, continuing their silverware drought.

“When you're playing for a trophy, nothing you can say will make them feel better,” a frustrated Mauricio Pochettino told the club website.

“They need to realise that we need to work, we need to do things better and improve. To compete at this level, you need to feel what it means to play for a big trophy. I remember that after three or four years [under Jurgen Klopp] Liverpool had lost the Europa League final and lost the Champions League final.

'But they kept believing in their project and got stronger each season until they got what they wanted. That is a good example and if we want to challenge a team like Liverpool, we need to keep believing, that is the most important thing.'
