Rising from the ashes of being sent off against Nigeria at the World Cup, Chelsea's Lauren James has been crowned the PFA Women's Young Player of the Year

Chelsea’s Lauren James has capped a brilliant year of football by being named the PFA’s Women’s Young Player of the Year for the 2022/23 season.

James wins PFA Women’s Young Player of the Year award

The Chelsea forward enjoyed a stellar year, helping the Blues to the FAWSL and FA Cup double with some inspired performances over the course of the season.

James also enjoyed a superb showing at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, helping England to the silver medal, although she also courted controversy after being sent off against Nigeria for a stamp on Super Falcons defender, Michelle Alozie.

The 21-year-old forward inherits the award from England international teammate Lauren Hemp, who has been named PFA Women’s Young Player of the Year in the last three seasons.

James joins Saka to claim Young Player of the Year awards

James joins Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, who won this year’s Men’s Young Player of the Year award, as testaments to England’s budding youth and bright future.

The Chelsea forward scored five goals and provided two assists in 18 FAWSL games for Chelsea last season, and will be hoping for a better return in the new season, with added responsibility and game time from the departure of Danish forward Pernille Harder.

Being only 21 years old, James could be set to dominate the Young Player of the Year category like Hemp, given that she has three more years of eligibility for the award.
