French football legend and 1998 World Cup winner Marcel Desailly has picked one African nation with the best chance of reaching the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

1998 World Cup winner Marcel Desailly has tipped Côte d’Ivoire as the African nation with the best chance of reaching the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Ghana-born former defender shared his prediction in Abidjan, a stop on the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour presented by Coca-Cola. Desailly highlighted the significance of the expanded 48-team tournament, which will feature a record nine African teams.

"Morocco successfully reached the semi-finals in the last World Cup, and now there are nine African teams participating in the system; one of them will make it to the final," he stated.

While identifying the Ivorians as his primary pick based on their potential, Desailly also expressed a personal hope for his birth country, Ghana, acknowledging its deep passion for the sport.

"Maybe Ivory Coast, even though I would really like Ghana to make it to the final," he remarked.

Desailly's comments have generated excitement among fans as the trophy tour builds anticipation for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

The nine African nations that have qualified for the global showpiece are Algeria, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia.

Notably absent from the lineup is Nigeria. The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the World Cup and also fell short in their bid to win the Africa Cup of Nations, where they were eliminated by hosts Morocco in a semi-final penalty shootout.
