The scenes of jubilation in Ikenne when they defeated Niger Tornadoes to seal their first ever title and first NPFL title by a south west team in 25 years were a testament to years of hard work and dedication.

Now, the question on the lips of many is, can the Remo Stars Ladies emulate this feat and conquer the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL)?

On the surface, the parallels are enticing, both the men's and women's teams operate under the same ambitious club structure, benefiting from the vision and investment that have propelled Remo Stars into the national spotlight.

The men's team's triumph was built on a foundation of discipline, tactical astuteness from coach Daniel Ogunmodede, and a strong collective spirit. These are qualities that, if instilled in the women's team, could certainly pave the way for success in the NWFL.

Remo Stars are the new league leaders have scored 23 goals.

The NWFL boasts of established teams with rich histories and seasoned players. The likes of Bayelsa Queens, Rivers Angels, and Edo Queens have consistently set the benchmark for women's football in Nigeria.

Overcoming such entrenched dominance requires not just ambition, but also exceptional talent, strategic brilliance, and a considerable amount of resilience.

Remo Stars Ladies are emerging as a team to watch, poised to challenge established NWFL Premiership teams at the Super Six tournament held at Remo Stars Stadium from May 8th to 17th.

The team finished second in the regular season with 30 points from 14 games, nine wins, three draw and two defeats.

Remo Stars are undefeated in their last 7 NPFL meetings with Enyimba.

The Sky Blue Ladies spending their second season in the topflight league have proved to be a team to be reckon with in the league with players making waves.

Players like Bolaji Olamide, Bashiru Kafayat, Ogundele Subomi have shown individual brilliance, suggesting the presence of quality within the team, Olamide leading the goal chart with a 4-goal chart lead on 14.

The key for Remo Stars Ladies will be to harness this potential and translate it into consistent performances against the top NWFL sides.

They will need to develop the same level of tactical cohesion and mental fortitude that characterised the men's title-winning campaign.

Coach Wemimo Matthew will play a major role in cultivating this winning mentality and devising strategies to overcome their experienced rivals.

Mixed reactions from NWFL analysts

Sports analyst Damilola Olaleye believes it's "realistic but will undoubtedly be a Herculean task" for Remo Stars Ladies, who are newcomers to the NWFL Super Six.

Olaleye added, "An opportunity to write her name in the folklore of not just the club but also in the NWFL, a female coach lifting the NWFL title, it's a memorable feat that we haven't seen in a while, only female coach in this Super 6 game."

"Array of top, experienced players, would need to up their game, different to the low intensity game which we saw at the tail end of the season," Olaleye stressed

However, playing at home with "a roaring home crowd cheering them on," makes it "possible and it would be historic."

NWFL enthusiast Saheed Afolabi concurs that, "It's possible because Remo Stars Ladies have a good squad to compete for the league title in addition to the wealth of experience of their gaffer, Wemimo Mathew."

Nevertheless, Afolabi cautions that "it won't come easy for the Sky Blue Ladies who will be taking on other top sides in the title deciding playoffs."

He points out a potential advantage of being hosts, saying "One advantage to Remo Stars Ladies will be playing on their home ground as host, in the last four editions of the Super Six, only Delta Queens won on home soil (2023), while Rivers Angels (2021), Bayelsa Queens (2022) and Edo Queens (2024) all won away from home."

Afolabi concludes by emphasising the competitive nature of the playoffs, "The Super Six is a different ball game, no doubt Remo Stars Ladies possesses top players but the other five teams aren't pushovers."

Voice of Nigeria sports analyst Mwaduiba Sunita believes Remo Stars Ladies face a difficult challenge in mirroring their male team's success by winning the NWFL.

She said, "It will be a tough task for them, in all sincerity i don't see them in top three of super six. I think Nasarawa Amazons should be in pole position followed by Bayelsa Queens to win NWFL."

The NWFL Super Six, the season-ending playoff, is a high-pressure environment where anything can happen. Even if Remo Stars Ladies have a strong regular season, navigating the Super Six successfully requires peak performance at the right time.
