Atletico Madrid vs Espanyol: Simeone challenges Lookman to 'Improve' after first LaLiga goal
The goal took Lookman's tally to four goals and two assists in just six appearances since his high-profile January move from Atalanta.
Despite the prolific output, manager Diego Simeone remains characteristically demanding. While the Argentine tactician is pleased with the clinical edge Lookman has brought to the squad, he has challenged the Nigerian to evolve beyond being a pure finisher.
Simeone demands more from Ademola Lookman
“Above all, he contributes goals. In principle, more goals than playmaking. He can improve both his overall play and his defensive work; we need him to adapt to the team’s style of play, and I see him eager and keen to improve,” Simeone said.
However, the Argentine tactician was quick to praise Lookman's work ethic and ability to find the back of the net.
“Since he arrived, he’s said he wants to improve as a footballer. His goal-scoring instinct isn’t a coincidence, and we need more of him in terms of overall play,” the manager added.
The focus now shifts to the UEFA Champions League, where Atletico face a high-stakes second-leg knockout play-off against Club Brugge KV.
Following a frantic 3-3 draw in the first leg, a match that saw Lookman score and fellow Nigerian Raphael Onyedika star for the Belgians, Simeone is counting on the home crowd to tilt the tie in their favor.
“We need to focus our message internally to energize our people. And based on our style of play and energy, I have no doubt that our stadium will be behind us,” Simeone insisted.
As long as Lookman's form continues, Atletico must be confident going into games, no matter the opponent.
The former CAF Player of the Year has proven his ability on the biggest stage, and LaLiga is now witnessing his supreme talent.
