Alex Iwobi reveals how Ian Wright inspired his off-pitch persona
Alex Iwobi’s work ethic can hardly ever be questioned, but when he is unplugged from football, he enjoys his life to the fullest, mirroring the seamless balance displayed by past greats like Ian Wright.
The Arsenal Academy graduate recently revealed that he idolised Wright's lifestyle as a player and models the work hard, play hard ethos.
What Iwobi said about Wright
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Iwobi revealed how he has learnt from past footballers, especially Wright, on balancing a football career with everything else.
“Looking at them, especially Ian Wright, he literally did whatever he wanted,” Iwobi said. “He expressed himself, gave 100% in football but also enjoyed his life.
“So I would also use him as a role model, that I still give 100% in my football. But I like to have fun on the pitch as well as off the pitch, so that’s my way with music, with fashion, and with charity stuff.
“There’s a lot of things I do just to … I wouldn’t say get distracted, but just, like, have a moment or just to breathe.”
Alex Iwobi: Off the pitch
The Nigerian superstar is one of the few footballers who have given fans access to their personalities outside the confines of football.
Like his national teammate, Ola Aina, Iwobi frequently goes live on Snapchat before and after matches, in the dressing room, and outside of it. This has earned him criticism from fans who question his focus and commitment, but undeterred, Iwobi is determined to continue to live his life how he pleases.
More interesting is Iwobi's fledgling music career. Like Wright, who released a single in the 90s, “Do the Right Thing,” the former Everton man also has a couple of songs out under the pseudonym “17” with singles like “Don't Shoot” and “What's Luv.”
