The Sports Ministry has revealed the extent of work needed to be ready ahead of AFCON 2027 while naming facilities earmarked as well as training venues and renovation deadline.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has revealed the extent of the renovation work needed at Kasarani Stadium as well as the progress of construction of a new stadium ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Kenya is preparing to co-host the 2027 AFCON tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania and while revealing that each country will need at least two stadiums with a minimum sitting capacity of 30,000 and three training venues, the CS said the Ministry of Defence is in charge of procuring AFCON 2027 infrastructure projects with work at Kasarani already in progress.
“The contractor is currently on site. It is expected that the project will be completed in December 2025,” Namwamba said of the renovation of Kasarani Stadium.

Kasarani Stadium's renovation is on course to be completed by the end of the year after Namwamba saw encouraging signs about the progression in his latest visit on Wednesday.
“The scope of work includes modernising of changing rooms, upgrading of the football pitch, installation of floodlights to illumination of 2000 lux, access control system, audio visual installation and sound system, installation of roof canopy, expansion of VIP sitting, installation of lifts and supply and installation of seats.”
The CS also explained that the proposed new 60,000-seater stadium is still in the works with its funding set to be allocated in the 2024-25 budget.
“Designs for the proposed new Talanta Sports City, whose centerpiece is a 60,000-seater premier stadium have been completed. Preparations for the commencement of the project are at an advanced stage,” he added.

Namwamba updated CAF President Patrice Motsepe on Kenya's preparations for the 2027 AFCON before meeting Didier Drogba on a visit to Ivory Coast for the ongoing tournament.
Kasarani and the new stadium are earmarked to host 2017 AFCON matches while there are a number of facilities that will be used as training venues whose facelift will end in December 2025.
They include; Kasarani upper warm-up, two grounds at the Kenya Academy of Sports, Nyayo National Stadium, Ulinzi Complex, Mbaraki Sports grounds, Shanzu Teachers’ Training College, Mombasa Municipal grounds, Diani ASK grounds, Eldoret University, Eldoret Polytechnic and Eldoret ASK grounds.
“It is a requirement by CAF that in hosting of AFCON, three training venues be in proximity of each competition venue and should be of similar standards to the competition venue surface. The renovations will be undertaken through a phased approach and are expected to be completed by December 2025,” Namwamba further explained.

The facility in Zanzibar is one of the stadiums tabled by the Tanzanian government for the joint hosting of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, along with Uganda and Kenya.
Meanwhile, the groundbreaking of the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret will take place in the first week of March with the facility expected to be ready by December 2025.
