The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is set to be shown in Nigeria days after Multichoice announced they would not be showing the competition on DSTV and GOTV.

Nigerians are set to watch all 52 matches of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the comfort of their homes after the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA)  announced they would broadcast the competition.

NTA to show AFCON after Multichoice disappointment

There have been question marks on how Nigerians would watch the match after Multichoice announced that the competition would not be on DSTV and GOTV.

The organisation announced that they did not win the rights to air the competition on their cable TV, leaving Nigerians worried about where to watch the competition.

However, there is finally hope for Nigerians as they can now watch the whole competition on the country’s national station,

NTA released a statement on its Twitter page in the early hours of Wednesday morning, stating they have an agreement with Afrosport to show all 52 matches.

NTA’s statement read: NTA SIGNS MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH AFRO SPORTS FOR TRANSMISSION OF 52 MATCHES OF AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS IN COTE d'Ivoire.

It should be noted that Afro Sports had secured the rights from New World TV, who beat Multichoice for the competition’s rights in sub-Saharan Africa.

Startimes AFCON broadcast in doubt

Meanwhile, in a separate development, Startimes AFCON telecast in Nigeria is in doubt after the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) questioned the legitimacy of their rights.

Like AfroSport, Startimes had also received rights from New World TV to show the competition in Nigeria. But NBC has now put doubt on the broadcast due to an alleged breach of broadcasting code.

Its Director-General, Charles Ebuebu has written to regional rights holders, New World Televisions S.A (NWTV) and CAF, pointing out critical concerns regarding potential violations of the NBC Code concerning the broadcast rights for the AFCON 2023.

The commission is concerned that there are breaches of the NBC Broadcast Code, designed to safeguard the interests of the Nigerian TV industry and viewers.

According to the memo sent, the code prohibits the practice of international rights being “bundled” in a way that negatively impacts the transmission and availability of rights in Nigeria.

Bundling refers to the practice of rights being sold on a multi-territory or continental basis instead of a national one, where multinational interests are allowed to take precedence over national ones.

It now remains to be seen if Startimes will resolve the issue with the NBC before the tournament kicks off on January 13, 2024.
