Jurgen Klopp comments on the defeat to Real Madrid.

Jurgen Klopp resigned to Real Madrid's superiority in their tie against them, saying they were the better and right team to qualify.

Real Madrid beat Liverpool 1-0 in the second-leg of their Champions League Round of 16 clashes tonight; the defeat followed a 5-2 first-leg loss, seeing them get knocked out of the competition on a 6-2 aggregate scoreline.

Liverpool knocked out of the Champions League

A strong showing was expected from Liverpool, who had the onus of attacking in the game as they were behind by three goals, however, Madrid created the better chances in the game, and Benzema's goals in the 78th minute of the game cleared all doubts.

Klopp, speaking after the game, was rather honest, admitting Madrid had the better chances in the match and have earned their qualification over them.

He said his team needed a special performance, and they made preparations to do the shocking and turn the tie around, however, they never managed it.

Klopp said that even if they were not down 5-2 and managed to get a draw in the first-leg, they would still have been knocked out. That was the level at which he believed Madrid played on the night.

He believes Real Madrid were by far the better side in the tie, and they won it in a way in which Liverpool stood no chance, as Liverpool's failure to qualify tonight came with no surprises, given the first-leg results.

“Being 5-2 down is not a great result if you want to got through,” Klopp said, per the BBC.

“Real Madrid had the best chances, Alisson made two fantastic saves. The right team went through, we have to admit that. Knockout stages are like this. It's not what we wanted but it's what we got.

"If we draw at home and play like we did tonight, we probably go out as well. We cannot come here and hope that we get something. We prepared for a special performance tonight but it didn't happen.

"Nobody thinks 'how could Liverpool go out' and that's probably the best sign that the right team went through and that's how it is in the knockout stage."

Liverpool play next after the international break, a difficult game away at the Etihad.
