Anthony Joshua's uncle said that neither the British-Nigerian boxer nor their family are interested in seeing Adeniyi Kayode, the driver during the fatal clash, go to prison.
Anthony Joshua’s uncle, Adedamola, said that neither the boxer nor their family wants his driver, Adeniyi Kayode, who was behind the wheel during the fatal clash, which claimed the lives of Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, to be imprisoned.
Kayode, 46, has been Joshua’s driver for three years and was driving the Lexus 570 SUV, which rear-ended a stationary truck on Monday, December 29, 2025, on the Lagos-Ibadan motorway, Makun area, Ogun State.
Kayode and Joshua survived the accident, and while the two-time world champion has since returned to England to continue mourning the death of his friends, Latif and Sina, the driver is embroiled in legal battles, having been charged with four counts, including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.
Update on the case against Adeniyi Kayode
As Pulse Sports reported, Kayode was arraigned on January 2nd at a Sagamu magistrate's court. The case was then adjourned until January 20th. Meanwhile, he was granted bail for ₦5,000,000 (five million naira).
However, when they reconvened on January 20th, the magistrate, Olajumoke Somefu, adjourned the case again until February 25th, at the prosecution's request. According to Punch, the prosecution requested a postponement so that the case file may be sent to the Ogun State Attorney-General's Office via the Department of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
The defence attorney, Abiodun Olalekan, argued against the postponement, insisting that they were prepared to begin the case. However, the judge ruled in favour of the prosecution.
What Anthony Joshua’s uncle said
In a conversation with Punch, Adedamola said that his nephew, Joshua, was deeply religious and regarded the accident as an act of God. Hence, neither the boxer nor his family wants to see Kayode behind bars.
“Our son (Joshua) is so much deep in religion and taking everything by faith; he will not want anything to happen to the driver,” Adedamola said.
“I see closeness between them, and he will not like him to go to jail because he has got his own family, and the children will suffer.
“The family is also not interested in him being jailed because an accident can happen anywhere in the world, so they should please spare this man. Let’s move forward.”
Meanwhile, Kayode’s defence is expected to contain elements of what he, his lawyer and his son have already shared with the media. They have rejected the claim that the accident was caused by overspeeding, citing brake failure as the cause of his loss of control of the automobile.
