ATHLETICS Faith Kipyegon beats Sha’Carri Richardson and Shericka Jackson in World’s Top Sports Personalities of the Year

Faith Kipyegon, Shericka Jackson, and Sha'Carri Richardson are among the notable athletes who were recognised by the International Association of Sports Journalists (AIPS) as the top global sports personalities.

Faith Kipyegon, the American duo of Sha’Carri Richardson and Noah Lyles together with Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson were recognised by the International Association of Sports Journalists (AIPS) in the World’s Top Sports Personalities of the Year.

The AIPS conducted a vote for Sportsperson of the Year and Kipyegon finished second, Jackson finished 12th and Richardson and Lyles finished 22nd and 13th.

The honour shows the huge achievements that the athletes have achieved alongside other athletes.

Kipyegon broke three world records last season, the 1500m, 5000m, and the one-mile records at the Diamond League Meetings. She started her campaign at the Meeting in Florence, Italy where she broke the 1500m world record.

Less than a week later, the Kenyan broke the 5000m world record in Paris, France before shattering the one-mile world record in Monaco.

Kipyegon then won double gold at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary before winning another trophy in the Diamond League Meeting final.

On his part, Lyles was voted in after winning three gold medals in Budapest, Hungary. He bagged the 100m and 200m medals and propelled his 4x100m relay team to victory.

His compatriot, Richardson, won the 100m in a world-leading time of 10.65, bagged bronze in the 200m, and gold in the 4x100m.

Jackson, representing Jamaica, successfully defended her 200m title and 100m and 4x100m silver medals.

Kipyegon led the field with 9.03%, ranking ahead of other track and field athletes like Tigst Assefa (5th), Femke Bol (7th), Yulimar Rojas (8th), Sifan Hassan (24th), and Maria Perez (31st).

Meanwhile, Armand Duplantis earned 9.19% in the men’s category, surpassing Soufiane El Bakkali (8th), Eliud Kipchoge (11th), Kelvin Kiptum (14th), Miltiadis Tentoglou (21st), Gianmarco Tamberi (24th), Jakob Ingebrigtsen (26th), and Ryan Crouser (28th).

US gymnast Simone Biles and Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic were named AIPS Athletes of the Year for 2023.

AIPS Best Male Athlete of 2023:

1. Novak Djokovic (tennis, Serbia): 616 votes (16,90%).

2. Armand Duplantis (athletics, Sweden): 335 votes (9,19%).

3. Leo Messi (football, Argentina): 277 votes (7,60%).

4. Erling Haaland (football, Norway): 229 votes (6,28%).

5. Max Verstappen (motor, Netherlands): 212 votes (5,82%).

6. Carlos Alcaraz (tennis, Spain): 184 votes (5,05%).

7. Hubert Kos (swimming, Hungary): 129 votes (3,54%).

8. Soufiane El Bakkali (athletics, Morocco): 119 votes (3,26%).

9. Nikola Jokic (basketball, Serbia): 115 votes (3,16%).

10. Kylian Mbappé (football, France): 96 votes (2,63%).

AIPS Best Female Athlete of 2023:

1. Simone Biles (gymnastics, United States): 353 votes (9,68%).

2. Faith Kipyegon (athletics, Kenya): 329 votes (9,03%).

3. Aitana Bonmati (football, Spain): 297 votes (8,15%).

4. Mikaela Shiffrin (skiing, Unites States): 256 votes (7,02%).

5. Tigst Assefa (athletics, Ethiopia): 237 votes (6,50%).

6. Iga Swiatek (tennis, Poland): 203 votes (5,57%).

7. Femke Bol (athletics, Netherlands): 190 votes (5,21%).
