Ajibade shines as Super Falcons edge Botswana to reach WAFCON Quarter-Finals.

Rasheedat Ajibade was named Woman of the Match after a commanding performance in Nigeria’s narrow 1-0 victory over Botswana on Thursday night in their second Group B clash at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Super Falcons, who were made to sweat by a resolute Botswana side, secured the win through a late strike by substitute Chiwendu Ihezuo, who found the back of the net right on the 90-minute mark.

Ihezuo’s goal, which is her second of the tournament, proved the difference in a tense contest at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, where both teams struggled to find rhythm in the final third.

Plumptre and Ihezuo.

The 25-year-old who played the full 90 minutes was a standout figure for Nigeria.

The former Atletico Madrid forward’s tenacity, ball control, and tireless work rate earned her deserved recognition as she helped the Super Falcons maintain dominance in midfield and wide areas.

Nigeria seal quarter-final spot

With the victory, Nigeria booked their place in the quarter-finals, topping Group B with six points from two matches and yet to concede a goal in the competition.

The nine-time African champions had earlier opened their campaign with a 3-0 win over Tunisia.

The Falcons are now set to face Algeria, who sit second in the group with four points on Sunday, in what will be a battle to determine who finishes top of the group.

What Magudu said

Head coach Justin Madugu praised his team’s composure and resilience, especially after being frustrated by Botswana’s defensive tactics for much of the game.

“Our players showed character tonight. It wasn’t easy, but we knew patience would be key,” Madugu said post-match.

With Ajibade leading from the front and Ihezuo in red-hot form, the Super Falcons look increasingly confident in their “Mission X” campaign to win a historic 10th WAFCON title.
