Esther Okoronkwo target bigger impact after player of the match win

Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo says she is focused on making a lasting impact for Nigeria at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), regardless of her role in the starting lineup.

The 28-year-old delivered a standout performance after coming off the bench in Nigeria’s 3-0 win over Tunisia in Casablanca on Sunday night, earning the Woman of the Match award.

Okoronkwo replaced Omorinsola Babajide at the start of the second half and instantly transformed Nigeria’s attacking rhythm.

Her pace and movement stretched the Tunisian defence, winning fouls and creating openings. She capped her performance with a superb assist for Chinwendu Ihezuo’s goal in the 84th minute, sealing the dominant win.

Rinsola Babajide was the hero as the Super Falcons of Nigeria defeated the Les Aigles of Tunisia 3-0 in their WAFCON group opener.

What Esther said

Despite not starting the match, the AFC Toronto star remained unfazed, emphasising her commitment to contributing wherever she's needed.

“It doesn’t matter where I start, what matters is the impact I have on the game,” she told CAFonline.

With six goals in 15 appearances for the Super Falcons, Okoronkwo continues to build her international profile. Her performance adds valuable depth to Nigeria’s attacking options as they chase a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

Nigeria next face Botswana in their second group game on July 10, before wrapping up the group stage against Algeria on July 13.
