'We Worked Tirelessly' - Crested Cranes Midfielder Reflects on Historic CAF Women's Champions League Debut
Crested Cranes midfielder Phiona Nabulime has made history, becoming the fourth Ugandan to compete in the CAF Women’s Champions League final tournament.
The former Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC star featured for Egyptian club FC Masar, joining an elite group of Ugandans that includes Joan Nabirye (Vihiga Queens, 2021) and the duo of Shadia Nankya and Aisha Nantongo (FC Masar, 2024).
In an interview with FUFA, the box-to-box midfielder reflected on her landmark achievement, the experience of competing at the continental level, and her journey in Egypt.
A Proud Moment for Uganda
Nabulime expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to represent her country on Africa's biggest club stage.
"I am humbled to be part of this achievement and for the support I have received," she said. "I am proud to represent Uganda at the continental stage, and I believe more Ugandans will feature in this prestigious tournament."
Recalling her debut, Nabulime emphasised her focus and the team's rigorous preparation. "During my debut, I was focused on staying calm and executing the team’s game plan, but also enjoying every moment," she explained.
"Our team’s preparation was really good; we worked tirelessly, and I knew we had what it takes to compete with the best."
Lessons from the Big Stage
The tournament proved to be a significant learning experience for the midfielder, who highlighted the mental and technical demands of elite competition.
"The tournament tested me mentally. My personal takeaways include developing resilience, learning to perform under pressure, and understanding the value of teamwork," Nabulime noted.
"Sharing the pitch with the very best has been an incredible learning curve, and I believe my experience has given me the maturity to keep pushing myself to be the best version of myself."
She also contrasted the Champions League with other competitions, pointing to its unique pressures. "The CAF Women’s Champions League stands out due to its intensity, exposure, and pressure," she stated.
"The level of competition is exceptionally high, requiring players to bring their A-game from start to finish, leaving no room for mistakes. There is also much media attention, making it a tourney that requires 100% focus and mental toughness."
Looking ahead, Nabulime is focused on continuous improvement. "I am committed to continuous growth, both on and off the pitch, striving to represent my club and country with excellence. I am grateful for the progress I have made so far, and I am excited to keep pushing forward," she concluded.
Phiona Nabulime’s landmark achievement in the CAF Women’s Champions League not only marks a personal milestone but also serves as an inspiration for the next generation of Ugandan female footballers striving to make their mark on the continental stage.
