Gor Mahia defender Bryon Onyona has given his assessment of how his team played during last weekend’s Mashemeji Derby.

Onyona started the match as Gor Mahia faced bitter rivals AFC Leopards at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday but K’Ogalo were subdued by a well-drilled Ingwe.

Leopards employed a great tactical approach that nullified all Gor Mahia’s strengths with Charles Akonnor’s side unable to threaten Humphrey Katasi’s goal while they scored from their best chance of the game, which fell to Julius Masaba.

With his coach having admitted that they were bullied and had no answers for the aggressive Leopards, Onyona agrees that K’Ogalo were timid and feels they crumbled under the weight of expectations.

Onyona Gives Honest Opinion on Derby Loss

“It was a hard game…we did not have urgency in our game…and I think we were kind of scared. It is a derby,” said the young left-back. “We did our best, it just wasn’t our day. We will try again next time.”

Onyona has become one of the revelations of the season, turning into a key player under Akonnor, who has preferred him over a number of experienced left-backs at Gor Mahia due to his fearlessness and ability to combine both defence and attack.

His marauding runs forward offers K’Ogalo another weapon in attack although just like his team-mates, he did not cover himself in glory on derby day when James Kinyanjui and Julius Masaba gave him a hard time.

Leopards won the 98th Mashemeji Derby, ending a run of four games without a win over Gor Mahia, having lost twice and drawn as many to their eternal rivals before Sunday’s victory.
