Tragedy strikes for Nigerian-born striker as ACL injury wrecks World Cup dream
Heartbreak has hit Porto and Spain forward Samu Aghehowa after a serious knee injury all but ended his hopes of featuring at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 21-year-old, who has Nigerian roots, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury that will keep him out for a long stretch, dealing a crushing blow to a season that had been flying.
Season cut short after devastating knee injury
Aghehowa picked up the injury during Porto’s Primeira Liga clash against Sporting CP, where he was forced off at half time. Medical checks later confirmed damage to the ACL in his right knee, one of the most feared injuries in football.
Recovery from an ACL tear usually takes anywhere from five months to over a year. That timeline rules the striker out for the rest of the 2025–26 campaign, despite Porto sitting four points clear at the top of the league and already securing a place in the Europa League knockout rounds.
It’s a cruel twist for a player who has been one of the standout performers in Portugal, scoring 20 goals in 32 appearances across all competitions this season.
World Cup hopes fade as Spain plan without him
The injury also means Aghehowa is unlikely to be fit for the 2026 World Cup, which kicks off on June 11. Spain have been drawn in Group H alongside Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, but they may have to tackle the tournament without one of their brightest young attackers.
Aghehowa has earned four senior caps since making his Spain debut in November 2024 and even started a World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria in October.
His rise had sparked excitement, especially after his move from Atletico Madrid to Porto in 2024, following a collapsed transfer to Chelsea. Newcastle United were also monitoring his progress closely last summer.
With Aghehowa sidelined, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente is expected to lean on options like Mikel Oyarzabal, Alvaro Morata, Borja Iglesias and Jorge de Frutos as plans shift ahead of the global showpiece.
