'The coach put me in goal' — World famous Manuel Neuer reveals he never wanted to be a goalkeeper
Manuel Neuer is celebrated as one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history, but the FC Bayern Munich captain has revealed that his journey between the posts happened by chance rather than design.
In a candid interview with L'Equipe, the 2014 World Cup winner, who recently confirmed his international retirement, admitted that becoming a goalkeeper was never part of his childhood dream.
‘I didn’t choose to be a goalkeeper’ — Neuer
Neuer explained that his position was decided for him shortly after joining the youth ranks at FC Schalke 04.
“I didn’t choose to be a goalkeeper. The coach put me in goal,” Neuer recalled. “I had just joined the youth team at Schalke, and there was no goalkeeper.”
The role was unpopular at the time due to difficult playing conditions. “We played on hard pitches, artificial turf, even surfaces that looked like parking lots. Diving hurt, and nobody wanted to do it,” he said.
In the end, what began as a temporary solution ultimately shaped one of football’s most iconic goalkeeping careers.
From reluctant keeper to global icon
Despite embracing the gloves, Neuer never lost his love for playing outfield football. He revealed that he always enjoyed contributing to build-up play, a trait that later defined his revolutionary “sweeper-keeper” style.
That unique ability to operate comfortably outside the penalty area helped redefine modern goalkeeping and set him apart from his peers.
Over the course of his glittering career, Neuer has amassed 12 Bundesliga titles, two UEFA Champions League crowns and lifted the FIFA World Cup with Germany in 2014, alongside a bronze medal finish in 2010.
From a reluctant stand-in to a global icon, Neuer’s story proves that sometimes greatness begins by accident.
