‘That’s my only mission’ — Nigerian-born star Eze confirms he is not at Arsenal to score goals or assist
Eberechi Eze has revealed that his ultimate ambition at Arsenal goes beyond goals, assists, or trophies.
Amid criticism over his recent performances, the Nigerian-born midfielder says his primary focus is on glorifying his faith rather than responding to online scrutiny.
'In everything he did, he thanked Jesus'
Eze has faced mounting pressure following a dip in form after his £67.5 million move from Crystal Palace.
Once hailed as the final creative piece to complement Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard, the 27-year-old has recently fallen down the pecking order.
His struggles were highlighted during Arsenal’s 1-1 draw against Brentford, where he was substituted at half-time. Pundit Alan Shearer remarked that Eze looked “lost” in the opening 45 minutes.
However, the midfielder remains grounded. Speaking about how he wants to be remembered, Eze said: “I want them to say that ‘in everything he did, he thanked Jesus, he glorified Jesus’. That’s my only mission, if I’m honest.”
Arteta urges patience amid criticism of Eze
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has publicly defended Eze, pointing to the tactical demands of certain matches.
“Well, I think he had moments, and it’s not easy when you move to a new club,” Arteta explained, noting Brentford’s physical, high-pressing style made it difficult for creative players to influence the game.
He clarified that Eze’s substitution was about tactical “profile,” opting for Odegaard’s movement to unlock the opposition.
Despite Arsenal’s lead at the top narrowing to four points, Arteta’s backing suggests the club still believes Eze can rediscover his best form, even as the player himself keeps his focus on a higher purpose.
