Swiatek defeats Sabalenka for successful Stuttgart title defense

In a battle between world No.1 and No.2, Iga Swiatek emerged victorious, defeating Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 6-4 to successfully defend her title in Stuttgart.

It was the first time since 2018 (Simona Halep and Caroline Woziniacki) that the world No.1 (Swiatek) and world No.2 (Sabalenka) faced each other in a WTA final, and for the first time on clay since Roland Garros 2013 (Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova).

Swiatek's victory is her thirteenth career title and second title in 2023, strengthening her hold as the world No.1 in women's tennis.

She is now the youngest player to win 6+ WTA clay courts titles since Martina Hingis when she won Hamburg in 2000. Her victories are Roland Garros 2020, Rome 2021, Stuttgart 2022, Rome 2022, Roland Garros 2022, and Stuttgart 2023.

Only Caroline Wozniacki (eight) has reached more clay courts WTA level finals than Swiatek before turning 22 this Century (seven, level with Svetlana Kuznetsova).

Speaking on her victory over Sabalenka, Swiatek appreciated her opponent's consistency throughout the year.

“Congrats to Aryna for everything. You had such an amazing season. With the Grand Slam at the start of the year, all the work you have put in has paid off. I am happy we’re so consistent and can play so many amazing matches together because I think fans enjoy it.”

For Sabalenka, it's her third straight final loss in Stuttgart, but she has promised to keep trying every year until she gets her hands on the winning prize of the Porsche car.

Swiatek will head to the next tournament as a favourite for the title, especially the Roland Garros, where she's expected to defend her title.
