This is the second serious case to involve Rennes recently. In August 2024, an 18-year-old professional player from the club received a two-year suspended prison sentence for the involuntary manslaughter of a 51-year-old pedestrian.

The accident happened on June 18, 2024, when the footballer "violently" struck the woman, a mother of two, with his scooter on a sidewalk in the city center. That player has since made his professional debut with Hellas Verona in Italy.
