Sebastien Haller: The €50m West Ham deal that made him one of Africa’s costliest strikers
Sebastien Haller’s journey through European football is a story of the rise, fall, and the remarkable resurgence of a striker whose value once made headlines.
From his breakout years at Eintracht Frankfurt to a big-money move to West Ham, then European rediscovery at Ajax, a battle with cancer at Borussia Dortmund, and an inspiring return culminating in international glory, Haller’s story is one of talent, turbulence, and tenacity.
The price tag placed on him in 2019 was steep, but Haller’s career is proof of exactly why clubs once believed he was worth every euro.
Haller’s Frankfurt breakthrough
Haller arrived in the Bundesliga at Eintracht Frankfurt in 2017, having built a modest reputation in the Dutch league.
At Frankfurt, Haller truly came into his own, and during the 2017/18 season, he played a key role in their DFB-Pokal triumph, the first major silverware of his career.
The following 2018–19 season became his breakout campaign. He scored 15 league goals in 29 appearances and added nine assists, and finished behind only Robert Lewandowski for goal contributions in the Bundesliga.
Haller’s imposing physical presence, aerial prowess, and ability to link up with teammates made him a nightmare for defenders.
That season marked him out as one of the most complete forwards in Europe outside the elite clubs, and the Ivorian’s performances caught the attention of several teams willing to gamble on his continued rise.
Haller’s record West Ham move and struggles
In July 2019, West Ham United activated Haller’s rising stock, signing him for a club-record fee, believed to be around €50 million, making him one of the most expensive African players of all time.
Initial appearances gave some hope. He scored a memorable bicycle-kick goal in a 3–1 victory over Watford shortly after his debut season began.
Yet the move never delivered long-term success. Issues piled up from managerial changes, to a system that did not suit his style, and personal difficulties off the pitch. Over more than fifty appearances for the club, Haller managed just 14 goal contributions.
By early 2021, West Ham decided to cut their losses and sold Haller to Dutch giants Ajax, a move that allowed him to rebuild in a familiar environment.
Haller’s revival at Ajax and Champions League heroics
The move to Ajax in January 2021, for around €22.5 million, marked the start of Haller’s resurgence, and in his first six months, he helped Ajax secure the Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup.
In addition to domestic success, Haller rediscovered his scoring touch in Europe’s elite competition as well.
In the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League campaign, the Ivory Coast international became the first player to score in seven consecutive matches, showing once again that when fit and in form, his finishing instincts remained elite.
His time at Ajax restored his confidence and showcased what he was capable of at peak physical condition: a forward with strength, clinical finishing, and the tactical discipline to thrive in a high-tempo attacking system.
Haller at Dortmund: Cancer diagnosis, and the greatest fight
In July 2022, Haller joined Borussia Dortmund as their marquee forward, expected to replace the departing Erling Haaland, who joined Manchester City that summer.
But shortly after his arrival, he withdrew from pre-season training following medical examinations that revealed a malignant testicular tumour.
Haller underwent two surgeries and four rounds of chemotherapy, with the treatment threatening not just his career but his life.
Against all odds, six months later, the Ivorian striker returned to training and, in January 2023, stepped back onto the pitch in a friendly. Just days after, he scored an eight-minute hat-trick in another friendly, a statement that he was back and hungrier than ever after his recovery.
In the 2022–23 Bundesliga run-in, Haller scored nine goals and added three assists. His contributions helped keep Dortmund in contention for the title until the final moments of the season.
From cancer diagnosis to AFCON glory
In 2024, after his recovery, Haller played for Ivory Coast's Elephants in the Africa Cup of Nations final against Nigeria on home soil.
He scored the winning goal against the Super Eagles in a dramatic 2-1 victory, capping one of the greatest comeback stories in modern football.
That moment did more than reward his perseverance. It showed that despite doubts and setbacks, Haller remained a striker capable of producing moments when it mattered most, thanks to his mental strength, and resilience.
Although his stint at Dortmund eventually tapered off and he moved on in 2025, his journey through hardship, survival, and triumph leaves a legacy beyond mere statistics.
