Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has explained why he feels the institution no longer has a massive club identity.

Amorim, who joined the Red Devils in November of 2024 from Sporting CP, has overseen one of the worst campaigns in Manchester United's history.

Taking over from Dutchman Erik Ten Hag, the Portuguese tactician came into an already struggling Manchester United side, but none would have imagined just how badly it was about to get.

Under Amorim, Manchester United did not even experience the proverbial new manager bounce.

Their faltering campaign has left the Red Devils wondering if Manchester United are still a massive club.

In a recent interview, Amorim admitted Manchester United's league position has been a worry for him.

United find themselves in 16th, just one place above the relegated teams, with 39 points.

The Portuguese tactician admits the manner in which his charges have found themselves in this predicament has left him questioning if Manchester United are still considered a massive club.

"For me, the biggest concern is that feeling that 'it's OK', and 'we cannot change our position so much so it's okay'," the United boss said, as quoted by Sky Sports.

United have somehow made peace with their league position, focusing their energy on the Europa League.

Amorim himself has previously admitted that they aren't as concerned with the league as much as they turn their focus on lifting the Europa League.

The consequence of that has been that, despite reaching the Europa League final, in the league they have suffered loss after loss.

Their most recent came at the hands of West Ham, who hammered them 2-0 to leapfrog them on the log.

"That is the biggest problem in our club in this moment because we are losing the feeling of 'we are a massive club' and it's the end of the world to lose a game at home. I think that is the biggest concern in our club," he added.

Bigger Concern than the Europa League Final

Amorim has declared their league position as embarrassing from where he sits.

"How is a manager of Manchester United supposed to feel in that position – embarrassed, and it's hard to accept," he said.

Amorim noted that despite being in the Europa League final, Manchester United have bigger fish to fry.

"I think everybody has to think seriously about a lot of things here. Everybody is thinking about the final. The final is not an issue in this moment in our club," said Amorim.

United have a date with Tottenham on Wednesday, May 21 in an all-important final, but Amorim stresses that their league position is a bigger issue.

In league action, United still have fixtures against Chelsea over the weekend and against Aston Villa the weekend after that to try and improve their league position.
