Manchester United legend slams Chelsea’s Caicedo for going through season without contributing
Moises Caicedo may have enjoyed a decorated season at Chelsea, but Manchester United icon Paul Scholes isn’t convinced.
Speaking during the Overlap Fan Debate, the legendary midfielder questioned Caicedo’s impact on games, despite his glowing accolades from the club and fans.
Scholes questions Caicedo’s real influence at Chelsea
Paul Scholes was highly critical when asked about Moises Caicedo’s performances in Chelsea blue during the 2024/25 season.
While acknowledging the midfielder’s full season of appearances, Scholes argued that playing a lot of games doesn’t automatically equate to a quality contribution.
“A lot of people were talking about Caicedo, saying he played 38 games. Yeah, but was there much quality? Did he create a lot? Did he control loads of games for Chelsea? I don’t remember that,” Scholes said.
The Manchester United legend went further to criticise a growing trend in modern football, claiming some midfielders now go “through seasons and games without really contributing.”
Scholes’ criticism looks shocking with Caicedo's awards
The former England international’s comments have stirred debate, especially given that Caicedo was voted both Chelsea’s Players’ Player of the Season and Supporters’ Player of the Season. For many, that signals not only consistency but also importance to the squad.
While Scholes remains unimpressed, the numbers suggest Caicedo had a strong campaign. The Ecuadorian made 52 appearances across all competitions and helped Chelsea lift the Europa Conference League, even scoring in the final against Real Betis.
His efforts earned him double recognition from both teammates and supporters, underscoring his standing within the club.
That said, there’s no rest yet for Caicedo as Chelsea’s Club World Cup campaign looms this summer, where they will face León, Flamengo, and ES Tunis in the group stage.
