Despite playing as a makeshift right-back, he helped the Super Eagles secure the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a tense penalty shootout on Saturday.

A goalless draw in regulation time led to a 4-2 penalty shootout victory for Nigeria. Goalkeeper Nwabali was the standout performer, saving spot-kicks from both Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and Manchester City's Omar Marmoush.

The experience also gave him a newfound appreciation for the demands of the full-back position.

"It gave me a lot of respect for people who play right-back because it’s very, very tough running up and down the pitch," he admitted. "In the end I was dead, but yeah, I was just happy that we got the victory."
