Inter’s Martinez involved in tragic death of wheelchair-bound man after accident
Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martínez has been involved in a fatal road accident that claimed the life of a man in an electric wheelchair in northern Italy.
The 27-year-old Spaniard was reportedly driving in the province of Como on Tuesday morning when the tragic incident occurred, prompting an immediate police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Martínez stops to help but tragedy unavoidable
According to Italian police, the man in the wheelchair was travelling on a cycle path that ran alongside the road when his chair appeared to veer unexpectedly into the path of Martínez’s car.
Authorities confirmed that the goalkeeper immediately stopped his vehicle and rushed to assist the victim, who unfortunately died before the arrival of emergency services.
The police have since launched a detailed inquiry to determine how and why the incident unfolded, including an assessment of road conditions, visibility, and vehicle speed at the time of the collision.
Eyewitnesses told local media that Martínez appeared visibly distraught after the impact, remaining at the scene and cooperating fully with officers.
Inter cancel press conference as investigation continues
Police have ruled out any immediate suspicion of reckless driving or intoxication, although formal statements are expected to be taken as part of the ongoing investigation.
In the wake of the tragedy, Inter Milan announced the cancellation of their scheduled press conference ahead of Wednesday’s Serie A clash with Fiorentina.
The club has yet to issue an official comment on the matter, with sources indicating that Martínez is “deeply shaken” and receiving psychological support from team staff.
Martínez, who joined Inter from Genoa last year and has been capped once for Spain, has made 12 appearances for the Nerazzurri.
