‘He gets frustrated’ - Amorim explains Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes can lose his temper
Manchester United head coach, Ruben Amorim, has offered a candid assessment of his club captain, Bruno Fernandes, admitting that the midfielder's fiery temperament on the pitch can sometimes detract from his overall focus.
Despite Fernandes's heroics in United's 2-1 pre-season friendly win over West Ham, Amorim believes there's an area for improvement.
Fernandes was in fine form at MetLife Stadium, bagging a brace to secure the victory for the Red Devils on their US tour.
What Amorim said
However, in his post-match comments, the 40-year-old Portuguese manager highlighted a recurring issue with his captain, even while praising his undeniable leadership qualities.
"It was so clear last season, you can see it with the goals and assists. But it's not just that," Amorim told reporters.
He added, "I think now he has more players, I feel, to help him to lead the group and that is a good thing. He is our leader and really important, not just on the field, but off the field. He leads by example. He works really hard, is always available and, sometimes, he plays with pain.
"Sometimes, the problem is he gets frustrated and loses a little bit of focus of his job. Sometimes, he wants to help the team-mates so much, it is not the best thing to do. They have to do their job and Bruno has, for example, to wait for the ball."
Manchester United will continue their pre-season preparations on Thursday when they face Bournemouth in their second friendly game at Soldier Field in Chicago.
