Ex-Harambee Stars Coach on How Hakim Ziyech’s Wydad Escaped Massacre From ‘Very Impressive’ Nairobi United
Nairobi United have been praised for displaying a great game in their CAF Confederation Cup match against Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club.
Naibos lost their fifth straight group stage game in the competition following a 1-0 defeat to Wydad with ex-Sevilla and Monaco striker Wissam Ben Yedder scoring the lone goal in the 89th minute.
It leaves the Kenyan side staring at the possibility of losing all their group games unless they pick a result against DR Congo’s Maniema Union this weekend.
However, former Harambee Stars coach Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee feels the Kenyan team were so impressive and should have carried the day were it not for their inexperience.
Naibos Controlled the Game

“A very good game in terms of action. Nairobi United created more chances and should have won if they took their opportunities. Experience made the difference.” #NairobiUnited #DimaWydad #CAFCC pic.twitter.com/SiesF0Uiac
“When you look at action in front of goal, Nairobi United created more opportunities. They should have won if they took their chances,” Mulee told SPM Sports.
“More so in the first half, they controlled the game but yet again, you know lack of experience at this level has really told in the game.”
Mulee is wowed by how the Salim Ali-coached Nairobi United kept at bay the star-studded Moroccan team, who had Yedder as well as ex-Chelsea forward Hakim Ziyech.
“When you look at total action in front of goal for the two teams, Wydad did not have a lot of opportunities but they were looking for just one opportunity that they could get the three points from Nairobi and that is what they did in the 89th minute,” he added.
What Cost Nairobi United?
“So, you look at the [lack of] experience it is what maybe cost Nairobi United. However, Nairobi United in this game have been very impressive. When you look at their previous games in this Confederation Cup…when they played Azam in Nairobi they did not play this kind of game.
“I would say there is much improvement in the team, more belief. I was impressed by how they started the ball from the back. They did not panic…they were unlucky and if they converted all the opportunities they got, they should have won this game,” the former Tusker coach further stated.
Naibos started their group stage campaign with a 3-0 away loss to Wydad before Maniema Union beat them 1-0 at home last November.
At the turn of the year, there was no respite for the Johnson Sakaja-backed club who lost 2-1 at home to Azam FC of Tanzania, before Florent Ibenge’s men handed them a 1-0 defeat in Dar es Salaam to knock them out with two matches to go.
