Manuel Neuer has confirmed he will not come out of international retirement, ending any lingering hopes of a dramatic return for Germany at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking after Bayern Munich’s 2-0 win over RB Leipzig, the 39-year-old goalkeeper made it clear that his decision to step away from the national team after Euro 2024 remains final.

Neuer shuts down comeback speculation

With Germany’s goalkeeping situation unsettled due to injuries and inconsistent form, rumours had circulated that Neuer could follow Toni Kroos’ example and make a surprise return for one last major tournament.

However, when asked by Bild whether his retirement decision was set in stone, Neuer responded firmly: “Yes.”

The veteran shot-stopper also voiced his support for current Germany number one Oliver Baumann.

“He is now number 1 and he is doing his job very well. He has generally shown very good performances and of course I’m keeping my fingers crossed for him and wish him all the best,” Neuer said.

His comments officially rule him out of contention for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Germany’s goalkeeping options moving forward

With Neuer out of the picture, Baumann is expected to retain the number one shirt, especially as Marc-André ter Stegen continues to struggle with injuries and limited game time.

Currently on loan at Girona after falling out of favour at Barcelona under Hansi Flick, ter Stegen has also picked up another injury, casting doubt over his availability for upcoming international fixtures.

Beyond Baumann, Germany’s other goalkeeping options include Freiburg’s Nigerian-born number one Noah Atubolu, Augsburg’s Finn Dahmen and Stuttgart’s Alexander Nübel, who will all be competing for places as the team builds toward 2026 without one of its greatest-ever players.
