Barcelona get huge boost in bid to bring Lionel Messi back to Camp Nou
Barcelona are closer than ever to creating the perfect stage for a long-awaited reunion with their greatest-ever player, Lionel Messi.
The Catalan club has received a massive boost in their plans to return to their iconic Camp Nou home after more than a year of redevelopment, and it now appears the stars are aligning for a potential emotional farewell for the Argentine legend.
New stadium progress clears path for Messi’s tribute return
Barcelona have confirmed that they are on schedule to return to the Spotify Camp Nou shortly after the September international break, with plans in motion to host the Joan Gamper Trophy there for the first time since August 2023.
While initial hopes of accommodating 60,000 fans have been scaled back due to delays in construction, the club has already secured one of the two necessary council licenses to reopen the stadium for matches.
A test event is scheduled for July 28 without the public, and pending a successful safety evaluation, the club is targeting its home clash with Valencia on September 13 or 14 for its full return to La Liga action.
The match against Italian side Como in the Gamper Trophy could serve as the official curtain-raiser to the revamped stadium, albeit with only 25,000–35,000 fans permitted initially.
UEFA officials have already inspected the venue and gave the green light for hosting Champions League matches from September onward. For Barcelona fans, the return to their spiritual home also represents a way for for Messi’s long-overdue tribute.
Summer 2026 earmarked for Messi’s grand farewell at 104,000-capacity Camp Nou
According to reports from Diario AS, Barcelona are planning to finally honour Lionel Messi with a massive tribute event in the summer of 2026, coinciding with the completion of the full Camp Nou renovation project.
The club aims to host this emotional farewell after the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a tournament likely to be the final one of Messi’s illustrious career.
This long-anticipated event will likely be held in front of 104,000 fans, offering the club and its supporters an overdue chance to say goodbye to a player who redefined their identity for more than two decades.
Since his abrupt departure in 2021, caused by Barcelona’s inability to register him due to financial regulations, the relationship between Messi and club president Joan Laporta has remained distant, with fans continually calling for closure.
Despite his current contract with Inter Miami, Messi could still make the journey to Camp Nou, whether as a player or retired icon, for what is expected to be one of the most emotional nights in the club’s history.
