Arsenal legend slams sacked Amorim for 'very embarrassing' treatment of Ghanaian-born Man United star
Manchester United’s recent surge under Michael Carrick has sparked fresh conversations about decisions made earlier in the campaign.
Arsenal legend Ian Wright has now weighed in strongly on how former boss Ruben Amorim handled Kobbie Mainoo.
Wright delivers brutal verdict on Amorim’s Mainoo decision
Ian Wright did not hold back while discussing Kobbie Mainoo’s situation under Ruben Amorim, insisting the former United boss should feel serious regret over how things played out.
The Gunners legend openly questioned why a player of Mainoo’s level barely featured, especially when Manchester United were struggling for midfield control.
Speaking after United’s 2-0 win over Tottenham, Wright said: "Everybody was confused with what was happening under Ruben Amorim." He pointed to Mainoo stepping into a struggling team and instantly showing composure, quality and intelligence in midfield.
Wright went even further, adding: "I think it's very embarrassing for Ruben Amorim if we're going to be totally honest." He stressed that seeing an academy graduate so close to leaving the club due to lack of chances raised serious questions about decision-making at the time.
Carrick arrival sparks Mainoo revival at Old Trafford
Since Michael Carrick stepped in, Mainoo has returned to being a core part of United’s midfield setup. He has played the full 90 minutes in four straight wins, helping stabilise performances and results.
Mainoo’s latest display against Spurs backed up Wright’s stance. The 20-year-old assisted Bryan Mbeumo’s opener and controlled the tempo alongside Casemiro, earning praise across the board.
Carrick has been full of praise but remains careful about pressure levels. He said: "There's no doubt about Kobbie's ability or what he can bring." He also added: "He's still so young, so let's be careful of putting so much on his shoulders."
Mainoo already has two assists during this run and looks fully settled again. With Casemiro expected to leave and contract talks likely to restart, the midfielder now looks set to play a major role in United’s future.
