Carlos Alcaraz advanced into the Round of 16 in Miami, fending off Lajovic in a dicey encounter.

World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz kept his title defence alive in Miami, defeating Dusan Lajovic 6-0, 7-6(5) to reach the Round of 16 and play Tommy Paul.

It was the teenager's third win over Lajovic in six weeks, his eighth consecutive win, 16-0 in sets at the Sunshine Double and 16-1 in 2023.

Alcaraz was effortlessly good in the first set, winning in a bagel. However, in the second set, Lajovic fought back, forcing a tiebreak. Now playing in a tense mood, Alcaraz lost three Match Points but regrouped and won the set, keeping his title defence hopes alive.

The Spaniard's opening set bagel victory is his fourth career bagel at ATP Masters 1000 level. While six players have won multiple 6-0 sets as teenagers since 1990, Alcaraz has equalled Rafael Nadal for the most.

Speaking after the match on beating Lajovic in Miami, Alcaraz mentioned his nervousness in the second set.

“I was serving for the match and the nerves came out. It was tough to deal with it. As I said, I am really happy with the way I am playing. I am happy with everything I am doing right now,” he said.

Alcaraz remains the favourite to successfully defend his Miami Open title in the absence of Novak Djokovic.
