William Troost-Ekong: Super Eagles Captain finally reveals return date after surgery

Super Eagles' AFCON hero Troost Ekong is expected to return to action in mid-May.

Super Eagles of Nigeria defender and captain William Troost-Ekong has shared a positive update on his recovery from recent surgery, indicating progress beyond expectations.

In a statement released today via his agency, The BFA Agency, Troost-Ekong expressed optimism about his rehabilitation process.

"Everything is going well," Troost-Ekong stated.

"I'm actually slightly ahead of schedule in my rehab. I'm off the crutches, I'm working out in the gym and pool, and very eager to get back on the pitch and start building my fitness back up."

The PAOK center back, currently recovering from injury, is eyeing a return to action in mid-May. His target aligns with the potential European Conference League Final, where Troost-Ekong hopes to be available for his club.

"Looking ahead," Troost-Ekong continued, "my goal is to be much fitter by mid-May, ready to contribute if PAOK reaches the European Conference League Final.

"Of course, the crucial World Cup qualifiers for Nigeria come right after that, and I'm definitely focused on being ready to contribute there as well."

Despite his sidelined status, Troost-Ekong remains firmly supportive of the national team's endeavors. 

He conveyed his best wishes to the Super Eagles for their upcoming friendlies and emphasized the importance of maintaining the momentum gained during the AFCON tournament.

"I want to wish the Super Eagles all the best for their upcoming friendlies," he said.

"It's important to maintain the momentum we built during the AFCON tournament. I'm also very happy to see a Nigerian legend like Augustine 'Infinity' George stepping in as interim coach."

Troost-Ekong concluded his statement by expressing gratitude to the Nigerian fans for their unwavering support throughout his recovery journey.

"Finally," he expressed, "I want to thank all Nigerians for their continued support. This experience has only motivated me to work even harder than before. I'm determined to come back stronger than ever."

Troost-Ekong's statements underscore his commitment to both club and country, as he aims for a swift return to the field and to contribute to the Super Eagles' success in future endeavors.

The 30-year-old Netherlands-born centre-back is reportedly eyed by a number of clubs in the Saudi Pro League ahead of the summer transfer window.
