‘We’ll miss you’ - Lionel Messi pens retirement letter to Argentine teammate Di Maria

Di Maria called an end to his international career, having made 145 appearances for the Argentinian national team.

He gracefully retired from the national team after helping Argentina win the 2024 Copa America tournament.

The veteran also had an impressive tournament, helping Argentina win the FIFA World Cup trophy in 2022.

Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi has wished his Argentina teammate Di Maria all the best in a letter.

According to Fabrizio on X, Messi said, “I'm sorry I couldn't be here on this very special night for you, you know I’m trying to get better so I can come back. 

“I wanted to be there, even with this video, and I hope you enjoy this night with your family, your loved ones and all the people of Argentina. 

“This tribute is so well deserved for everything you gave us. On a personal level, we told each other everything we had to say. 

“We were lucky enough to share a year together. Who would have thought about everything we went through in the national team, everything we experienced. 

“Beyond everything we had to go through, we ended up champions of everything. Enjoy it because you deserve it, we're going to miss you a lot.”

Lionel Messi was not available for Argentina in their 3-0 victory against Chile, as he currently nurses an injury.

He was unable to travel to Buenos Aires for Di Maria's spectacular farewell at Estadio Monumental due to his injury.
