Youngster Nico O'Reilly proved to be the match-winner, scoring once in each half to secure three points for City. Newcastle pulled one back through a deflected effort from Lewis Hall, but Guardiola’s side held firm under pressure.

What Guardiola said

The Spaniard acknowledged the intensity of the contest, emphasising how vital the supporters’ presence was in pushing his team over the line.

“Our connection with the fans today was the best of the season,” Guardiola said after the match.

He added, “We have five home games left in the Premier League and we need that vibe.

“The game that we played today is what is going to happen for the next 11. It was so difficult. I always say we have to play for them.

“Sometimes they cannot come for many reasons, when we play in midweek the day after the kids have to be at school. Tomorrow most people are off on Sunday so it was perfect. We encourage them to come. We do our best and don’t want to disappoint them.”

Turning his attention to the title run-in, Guardiola admitted that improvement will be required if City are to lift another league crown.

“It’s not enough what we have done in many games this season to win the Premier League. We have to do better to give us the chance to do it,” he confirmed.
