Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney continues to back Arsenal for the Premier League title.
Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney insisted that Arsenal only needed to focus on winning their matches and not concern themselves with the exploits of Manchester City in what is shaping up to be a two-horse Premier League race.
Manchester City completed a remarkable double against Liverpool in the league this season, beating them 2-1 at Anfield after a 3-0 triumph at the Etihad earlier in the season. The win cut Arsenal’s lead to six points; still, Rooney insists the Gunners do not have to worry about the Cityzens.
What Rooney said
Arsenal are overwhelming favourites to be triumphant come May having shown a consistency level unmatched by any other contender. They opened a nine-point lead with their victory against Sunderland, and failure to beat Liverpool would have made the gap insurmountable, according to Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva.
Despite the incredible victory, Rooney, who won the EPL five times, is not convinced the race is any more predictable as it was at the start of the gameweek, urging Arsenal to focus of their own matches.
“It's an important one for Manchester City today,” he said, per the BBC. “It's a tough place to go Anfield. I thought Liverpool were really good second half, City were really good first half – then City have gone a goal down and dug in to get the three points.
“Arsenal can only focus on themselves. I'm sure they will have had an eye on the game, because if City lose, it does become difficult for them. But Arsenal just need to focus on doing their own job.”
Rooney’s confidence in Arsenal’s candidacy is such that when the Gunners suffered a 3-2 defeat to their old foes, Manchester United, at the Emirates, which prevented them from going four points clear at the top of the standings, he expressed confidence that they remained favourites.
