Wayne Rooney is announced as Birmingham City Football Club's Manager, supported by experienced coaches, promising exciting, ambitious developments for the club.

Birmingham City Football Club ushered in a new era by appointing Wayne Rooney as their Manager on a three-and-a-half-year contract on Wednesday.

This exciting development follows Rooney’s recent departure from his Head Coach position at Major League Soccer side, D.C. United.

Rooney, 37, embarks on this journey supported by a robust coaching staff, including his former England international teammate, Ashley Cole, John O’Shea from the Republic of Ireland men’s national team, and his trusted aides from D.C. United, Carl Robinson and Pete Shuttleworth.

While Cole and O’Shea will continue their roles with their national sides, Maik Taylor will steadfastly remain the Goalkeeper Coach for Birmingham.

“I am absolutely delighted to be joining Birmingham City Football Club at such an exciting time,” Rooney told the club website. Expressing alignment with the club’s ambitions, he added, “It is very clear that they have a plan and are committed to realising their ambition for the club. We are fully aligned on what is expected.”

Rooney's managerial career commenced in earnest with Derby County in January 2021, where he showcased his prowess by guiding a struggling team from the brink of relegation to safety in the Sky Bet Championship.

Despite a daunting 21-point deduction in his first season, Rooney’s effective leadership and strategic use of Academy players allowed the team to accumulate an impressive 55 points, navigating through numerous club-related challenges.

Birmingham City co-owner and Chairman of the Board, Tom Wagner, expressed his confidence in Rooney’s appointment stating, “Wayne is a born winner. With the support of his coaching staff, the Club, and our supporters, he will take Blues forward on the next stage of our journey.”

Wagner further highlighted Rooney’s playing philosophy as a crucial element in realizing the club’s ambitious objectives, underscoring the board and club’s full support for Rooney and his coaching team.

Echoing Wagner’s excitement, Birmingham City’s CEO, Garry Cook, remarked, “We are incredibly excited by Wayne’s arrival.” He emphasized the significance of appointing a manager who not only shares the club’s ambition but is also deeply knowledgeable and passionate about the game.

Cook is confident that Rooney’s leadership, bolstered by a carefully selected coaching staff, will lead to the formation of a “young, attack-minded team” that promises to thrill fans. He also noted that the timing of this appointment is perfect, allowing Rooney and Craig Gardner adequate opportunity to assess and recruit playing staff ahead of the upcoming transfer windows.

Rooney, eager to start this new chapter, acknowledged the potential in the young players in the squad and expressed his commitment to implementing a clear playing strategy with the support of his coaching team. “We will create a winning culture here with an identity that gets Blues fans on their feet,” he assured.

Reflecting on the passionate support of Birmingham City fans he experienced as a player at St. Andrew’s, Rooney is thrilled to now have them behind him and is committed to elevating the club to new heights.
