Villarreal's Alex Baena equalled a record set by former Yellow Submarines forward Samuel Chukwueze

Villarreal’s Alex Baena equalled a record set by Super Eagles star Samuel Chukwueze after a brilliant performance against Barcelona in LaLiga this game week.

Baena equals Chukwueze record

Baena found the back of the net against the reigning LaLiga Champions, scoring in the 50th minute to give the Yellow Submarines a 3-2 lead on the night but also provided an assist for Juan Foyth earlier in the game for Villarreal’s opening goal of the game.

In doing so, Baena equalled a record achieved by Chukwueze in 2019 when he became the first Villarreal player to score and assist against Barcelona in the same match in the 21st century.

Before Chukwueze and Baena, the only other time a Villarreal player had achieved this feat was in 1999 when Manolo Alfaro scored and assisted against the Blaugrana.

Baena effort not enough to see Villarreal past Barcelona

Baena’s heroics were not enough for Villarreal, however, as they succumbed to a 4-3 defeat in a thrilling encounter at the Estadio de la Ceramica in Spain.

The loss was Villarreal’s second defeat in three games in the new season, while Barcelona made it two wins from three to keep pace with early leaders Real Madrid, who maintained a perfect three wins from three matches to start the new season.

The Yellow Submarine appear to be missing the services of Chukwueze, who joined Serie A giants AC Milan from Villarreal over the summer after an impressive 2022/23 season.
