Napoli appear to have taken sides with Real Madrid and Barcelona to support the formation of a European Super League, according to the club's CEO, Aurelio de Laurentiis

Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen might be one of the stars of the European Super League if Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis gets his way.

Napoli president unhappy about football’s direction

The increasingly unpopular idea of a European Super League has been widely rejected by most of Europe’s elite clubs despite a court ruling in favour of the body planning to organise it, but not all clubs are uninterested in the project.

Reigning Serie A champions Napoli are among the few clubs still holding out hope for the formation of a new competition to rival the UEFA Champions League, with president de Laurentiis noting that he would be willing to sit with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to iron out details of a possible ESL.

Speaking to Corriere Dello Sport, de Laurentiis said, “I spoke to Florentino Perez and we agree on meeting with other entrepreneurs to discuss about future plans. Football is being managed by old people with no vision.”

Napoli among minority support for ESL

Currently, only Barcelona and Real Madrid have firmly held their necks out in favour of the ESL, with former founding members Juventus also distancing themselves from the project following their capital gains troubles.

Clubs in England, as well as the vast majority of clubs in Spain have already released statements, announcing their intention to shun any breakaway leagues.

Despite the promise of greater financial reward and the apparent legality of the competition, European clubs remain unwilling to side with the ESL and the rejection of the premise for the tournament could spell its end.
