The Premier League is considering a major overhaul of the VAR system, which could address the concerns of fans who have been critical of the current implementation.

In a major shake-up to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, Premier League officials have confirmed that referees will soon be using the stadium PA system to explain their decisions after consulting the pitch-side monitor.

The changes, which are being trialled by football's lawmakers at IFAB, aim to address the growing frustration among fans over the lack of transparency surrounding VAR calls.

Referees to Explain VAR Decisions

Speaking during a Premier League show, PGMOL chief Howard Webb acknowledged that the current VAR implementation "does need improving".

"When you hear the clips on shows like this, it makes sense what's happening,” Webb noted per a Daily Mail report. “It all becomes apparent."

The new approach, which has been used at recent FIFA tournaments like the Women's World Cup, will see referees provide live commentary to supporters inside the stadium, detailing the reasoning behind their final decision.

"We're looking at ways to improve the in-stadium experience," Webb explained. "One of the things you'll have seen maybe in FIFA tournaments is announcements from the referee once they've been to the screen. We're looking at that."
