The Italian manager ended the Manchester City trainer’s ambition to claim back-to-back trebles.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid side will play this season’s Champions League semi-finals after eliminating Manchester City in a dramatic night at the Etihad Stadium.

Wednesday night’s reverse fixture was not as goal-laden as the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu but was not short on drama.

Rodrygo put Los Blancos 1-0 up after 12 minutes, meaning Pep Guardiola’s troops had to chase the game to avoid elimination. An equaliser came through Kevin De Bruyne in the 76th minute, and it stayed that way for the rest of the 90 and extra time.

Andriy Lunin was the penalty shootout hero, thwarting Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic, with his teammates converting after Luka Modric's kick was saved by Ederson

Victory for Ancelotti’s men pits them against Bayern Munich after the deposed Bundesliga champions eliminated Arsenal in the night’s other quarterfinal.

Is Ancelotti Guardiola’s Champions League nemesis?

A statistic surfaced in the aftermath of Wednesday night, highlighting that Ancelotti has now eliminated Guardiola in three Champions League knockout rounds, more than any manager in the Spaniard’s emerged in the competition as Barcelona boss in 2008-09.

The Italian got the better of Guardiola — then Bayern boss — in the 2013-14 season and repeated the trick in the 2022 semi-final with the Spanish manager in charge of Man City. Wednesday’s success in the competition’s last eight made it the third time Ancelotti has got the better of last season’s treble winner.

Strikingly, Ancelotti went on to win the Champions League in 2014 and 2022, and the Loc Blancos boss hopes to make it three from three this term.

What comes next for Real Madrid and Manchester City?

Apart from Champions League contention, Real Madrid have the small matter of warding off Barcelona in the LaLiga title race. Los Blancos hold an eight-point advantage over Xavi Hernandez’s team but could extend that gap in this weekend’s El Clasico to nearly seal another top-flight crown.

Even if Guardiola’s treble dream is over, the City boss could still claim a domestic double in the Premier League and FA Cup.

The Citizens face Chelsea in Saturday’s domestic cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium, keen to make back-to-back finals, and are locked in a three-way battle with Arsenal and Liverpool in their chase for a fourth consecutive league crown.
