El Hadji Diouf never forgets. After Senegal humiliated England 3–1, he made sure Jamie Carragher understood.

Former Liverpool forward El Hadji Diouf took a pointed jab at Jamie Carragher following Senegal’s historic 3-1 victory over England in an international friendly.

Diouf, who once played alongside Carragher, appears to have reignited the feud on Carragher’s controversial comments about the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Carragher's comments on AFCON

Carragher had previously sparked outrage by suggesting that AFCON is not a "major tournament" on the same level as the Euros or Copa America, arguing that this perception hinders players like Mohamed Salah from winning the Ballon d’Or.

During a Sky Sports discussion, Carragher claimed that Salah’s chances were diminished because AFCON does not carry the same weight in global football as European tournaments.

Carragher scoffed at the statement that AFCON is a major tournament.

His remarks were widely criticised by African football legends and fans, with many accusing him of disrespecting African football’s premier competition.

Diouf's reaction to Senegal's win

El Hadji Diouf responded sharply on social media, saying, "That one's for that Carragher! Look at Jamie Carragher!” - a reminder of Carragher’s understanding of African football, highlighting that legends like Eto’o, Drogba, and himself have all shone on the world stage despite Carragher’s dismissive stance.

Senegl claimed a historic win against England.

Carragher later admitted he was “clumsy” in his comments and clarified that his point was about the historical bias in Ballon d’Or voting, where tournaments outside the World Cup and Euros have less influence.

However, the backlash from African football figures and fans undershow the growing demand for greater respect and recognition of AFCON’s significance.

Senegal’s emphatic win over England not only marked a milestone on the pitch but also served as a symbolic rebuttal to Carragher’s earlier remarks, stressing the rising stature and competitiveness of African football on the global stage.
