Senegal made history by defeating Thomas Tuchel’s England 3-1 in an intense international friendly, handing Tuchel his first loss as England manager.

Thomas Tuchel suffered his first defeat as England manager as the Teranga Lions of Senegal defeated the Three Lions 3-1 in an international friendly at the City Ground in Nottingham on June 10, 2025.

This was the first time England lost to an African opponent in 22 encounters.

England took an early lead in the 7th minute when captain Harry Kane capitalised on a mistake by Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, who spilt the ball into Kane’s path for a simple finish.

However, Senegal equalised in the 40th minute through Ismaïla Sarr, who took advantage of a lapse from England’s Kyle Walker to poke in a cross from Nicolas Jackson.

In the second half, Senegal raised their intensity and took the lead for the first time in the 62nd minute when Habib Diarra fired the ball through goalkeeper Dean Henderson’s legs.

England’s Jude Bellingham thought he had equalised five minutes from time, but the goal was disallowed by VAR due to a handball by teammate Colwill in the buildup.

Senegal sealed the victory deep into stoppage time with a counterattack finished by Cheikh Sabaly, ensuring a 3-1 win and extending Senegal’s unbeaten streak to 24 matches.

The result was a significant upset for England and raises questions about Thomas Tuchel’s side as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The defeat ended England’s perfect start under Tuchel, who had won his first three games without conceding a goal.

The match also marked England’s first appearance at the City Ground in 80 years and was watched by fans who expressed frustration at the team’s performance, especially after a lacklustre 1-0 win over Andorra in their previous match.

In summary, Senegal made history by becoming the first African team to beat England, showing resilience and tactical discipline to overcome the early deficit and claim a memorable 3-1 victory.
