Victor Ikpeba says DR Congo deserved their World Cup playoff victory over Nigeria after a poor Super Eagles display.

Former Super Eagles forward Victor Ikpeba has stated that the Democratic Republic of Congo fully deserved their victory over Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff showdown, insisting the Super Eagles were second-best for most of the match.

DR Congo booked their place in the Intercontinental playoffs after edging Nigeria 4-3 on penalties, following a tense 1-1 draw after extra time.

Nigeria enjoyed a dream start when Frank Onyeka fired home inside three minutes. But the advantage was short-lived as Meschak Elia pounced on a costly error from Wilfred Ndidi to level the score in the 34th minute.

From then on, Nigeria struggled to regain control. Congo dominated the second half and extra time, forcing Stanley Nwabali into a crucial late save to drag the match to a shootout.

What Ikpeba said

Speaking on SuperSport, Ikpeba delivered a blunt assessment of the team’s performance, arguing that Congo were superior in every key department.

“Physically, the Super Eagles didn't turn up. They capitulated totally in the second half,” Ikpeba said.

“The Congolese were the better side in the second half and extra time. They were physically stronger.”

The former African Footballer of the Year added that Nigeria failed to match the intensity they displayed in their dramatic semifinal win over Gabon.

“The Super Eagles didn't come to the party in the game. They gave a lot against Gabon but struggled against Congo.”

Ikpeba described the loss as a setback for what is considered one of Nigeria’s most talented squads in recent years.

“So much was expected from these boys, especially if you look at the talents in the team.”

However, he acknowledged their passion and resilience in recent competitions.

“They showed a lot of passion and determination at the last AFCON. We cannot take that away from them.”

Nigeria’s defeat means their hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup now hang by a thread, while DR Congo moves one step closer to securing a historic qualification.
