"South American clubs stand no chance against European sides" - World Cup winner claims

Alexis Mac Allister, the Argentinian international, comments on the imbalance between teams from the two continents in the Club World Cup

The 26-year-old midfielder emerged from the Argentinian football scene, playing for Argentinos Juniors and then Boca Juniors.

He has been playing in Europe, specifically England, since 2020, first with Brighton and now Liverpool, where he was a key figure in their Premier League title win.

What Mac Allister said

In an interview with Sergio Aguero on ESPN's "La Casa del Kun," via Abola, Alexis Mac Allister discussed the recent successes of South American teams against European opponents in the Club World Cup, citing Botafogo's 1-0 victory over PSG and Flamengo's 3-1 triumph against Chelsea.

However, the Argentinian World Cup winner believes these results are exceptions to the rule of general European dominance.

"Argentine or South American clubs can compete in one or two games, but over time they don't stand a chance against European sides. South American teams match European teams in passion and the desire to win, but ultimately, that's not enough," Mac Allister stated.

In the same interview, the 26-year-old heaped praise on PSG, who have already reached the Club World Cup quarter-finals and knocked Liverpool out of this season's Champions League: "They're the best team around, they're flying. They have it all: they are very disciplined, play well with the ball, and have great movement. For me, they are the best."
