Sébastien Haller: Fans troll Liverpool for failing to emulate Brighton by celebrating Sadio Mane’s AFCON title win
Ahead of this weekend’s Premier League fixture against Brentford, Liverpool have found themselves under the spotlight once again.
The Reds were recently trolled by fans on social media for its perceived failure to adequately celebrate Sadio Mane's AFCON success with Senegal back in 2022.
As Borussia Dortmund and Brighton & Hove Albion recently showcased their pride in their AFCON-winning players, Sébastien Haller and Simon Adingra respectively, fans couldn't help but recall Liverpool's past actions, or lack thereof, in honoring Mane's achievement.
Fans Drag Liverpool over Sadio Mane’s AFCON Triumph
While Borussia Dortmund rolled out the red carpet to welcome Sébastien Haller back after his triumph with Ivory Coast in AFCON 2023, Liverpool's handling of Sadio Mane's AFCON victory two years prior has resurfaced as a point of contention among football enthusiasts.
The difference in how these clubs acknowledged their players' achievements has reignited debates on social media, with fans taking to X once more to express their disappointment and frustration towards Liverpool.
The controversy comes from reports that Liverpool, at the request of Mane himself, refrained from publicly celebrating his AFCON success in 2022 to avoid causing discomfort to his teammate at the time, Mohamed Salah, whose Egypt side was defeated by Senegal in the finals.
This decision, although seemingly respectful of internal team dynamics, has since been criticized by fans who feel that Mane, who now plays for Al Nassr, deserved more recognition and acknowledgment from the club.
Some users went as far as condemning the club's handling of Mane's AFCON victory as "disgraceful" and "nasty."
