Salisu Yusuf was banned for bribery and corruption, yet he is being tipped to take over as Nigeria’s coach.

Multiple reports say the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has drawn up the disgraced Salisu Yusuf as the next potential coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

Jose Peseiro is the current coach of Nigeria’s national team after he was appointed last year following the sacking of Augustin Eguavoen.

However, Peseiro’s contract expires in June as he only signed a 12-month contract. The Portuguese tactician was supposed to take Nigeria to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for January, but the competition was postponed till next year.

Not only that but the Portuguese tactician is also being owed a backlog of wages, prompting speculations that he could leave this summer.

With Peseiro’s future unclear, the NFF has identified Salisu as a potential replacement for the former Venezuela manager.

Salisu is familiar with the national team setup as he has served as an assistant under many managers, including Gernot Rohr.

The former Rangers international coach has also served as the manager of the home-based Eagles.

Salisu’s controversial appointment

Should the NFF go ahead and appoint Salisu as the new head coach, it would be one of the federation’s most controversial decisions in history.

Salisu was once banned for one year for collecting bribes to influence his team ahead of the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN).

The disgraced tactician was caught on camera, receiving dollars in exchange for his team selection.

Although he has since returned to management after serving his ban, Salisu has failed in almost every job he has gotten.

The 61-year-old was in charge of the U-23’s ill-fated AFCON qualifying campaign this year. The ex-Enyimba technical adviser failed in his mission to lead Nigeria to the U-23 AFCON, which is set to serve as the qualifiers for next year’s Olympics.
