Abuja ignored as CAF approves ONLY Uyo's Stadium for Super Eagles AFCON qualifiers

The Super Eagles had earlier played two of their three home game in the AFCON qualifiers at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have confirmed that only the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo can host the Super Eagles' 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in June this year.

The month of June will see a continuation of the qualifying series for the 2023 AFCON scheduled to hold in Cote d'Ivoire from January 13 to February 11, 2024.

CAF ignores Abuja stadium, lists Uyo for Super Eagles

In their earlier home games in the qualifying series, the Super Eagles had hosted Sierra Leone and Guinea-Bissau at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja, winning the first 2-1, and losing 1-0 in the most recent.

In an official communique sent out on Monday with the tagline “specific for the group stage qualifiers on Matchday 5”, CAF noted particular home stadia where national teams could which play their matches.

The Godswill Akpabio Stadium - the only approved stadium by CAF had in 2022, been the venue for the final of the CAF Confederation Cup, and is in the running to be one of the stadiums to be used in the maiden Africa Super League.

The last time the Super Eagles played in Uyo was against Benin Republic during the 2021 AFCON qualifiers.

South Africa allowed 7 home stadiums for AFCON qualifiers

South Africa were granted permission to choose seven (7) of their home stadium, the most for any team, while the trio of Algeria, Egypt, and Morocco were granted permission to five (5) home stadiums.

Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea had three (3) home stadiums approved for their usage, while Ghana with two (2) was the other nation with more than one approved stadium.

The Jose Peseiro-led Super Eagles currently top Group A of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers with nine points from four games, and a draw against Sierra Leone in their next fixture will be enough to seal a place in Cote d’Ivoire 2023.
